IDEM supports international development, scientific research and international understanding, specifically in the fields of media, promotion of democracy and cultural exchange.

SDG LABORATORY for Green Journalism in Europe

Journalists from France, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and Germany took part in advanced training that included online workshops and networking meetings held in Moldova, Germany, and Poland. They received training on SDG-related topics, were introduced to new media practices, and connected with scientists and experts from the participating countries. Together, they analyzed the status of SDG implementation in their regions, and published their own media pieces and cross-border investigations and submitted funding proposals for investigative projects focused on sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on climate and environmental journalism. As a result, cross-border stories were published in media across all project countries, and proposals for further investigative environmental journalism were developed. The program aimed to strengthen journalistic skills, build international networks, and increase public awareness of SDG and human rights issues through impactful media coverage.

BRAZIL: Indigenous voices for climate justice, resilient societies and a socio-ecological gender-just transformation

The project empowers indigenous communities in the Amazon—who are especially affected by climate change—by strengthening their media. Indigenous journalists are trained on environmental conflicts and rights, grassroots multimedia content is produced, and local communication networks are reinforced to support climate justice and ensure access to information and freedom of expression.

BRAZIL - MEDIA Professionalization of indigenous media for the participation of marginalized groups and the empowerment of women in the Amazon region

In partnership with Rede Wayuri, a network of young indigenous communicators in the Amazon, indigenous journalists are trained to produce high-quality multimedia content focused on women’s empowerment and indigenous rights. Activities include workshops on gender-transformative communication, investigative journalism, and fact-checking. The project also supports the production of \“Women's Voices\” programs and strengthens the network of indigenous women journalists.

UKRAINE: NEWS CAMP on Information Literacy

Young Ukrainians aged 18 to 22—12 journalism students in Ukraine and 12 Ukrainian war refugees in Germany—participated in parallel workshops at the journalism and media faculties of the universities in Lviv and Leipzig. They learned practical skills in mobile journalism, news reporting, and fact-checking. Both groups came together for a networking event in Leipzig and Halle, where they met with journalists from German media outlets and produced social media videos as learning materials on media and news literacy. Following this, they conducted their own workshops on disinformation and fake news for their peer groups at home. The NEWS CAMP ON INFORMATION LITERACY aimed to raise awareness among young Ukrainians—both in Ukraine and abroad—about the importance of trustworthy journalism and the safe handling of news, responding to growing disinformation and mistrust in media that threaten democratic discourse.

UKRAINE: MEDIA HOUSE ON SUSTAINABILITY for journalists from local media in Ukraine

Journalists from all regions of Ukraine—from Western Ukraine and from war-affected or Russian-occupied areas who had relocated or whose editorial offices had moved—deepened their knowledge of sustainable agriculture during wartime. They produced and published media reports for local and regional outlets and connected with international experts from Ukraine and Germany. In online workshops, they were introduced to topics such as sustainable agriculture, food security, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During a MEDIA HOUSE in Uzhhorod (Zakarpattia), they researched practical case studies and reported on them in their local media. Follow-up workshops featured expert discussions on additional topics, which participants also investigated and published on. The MEDIA HOUSE ON SUSTAINABILITY aimed to promote SDG-related coverage in local media and raise public awareness about the potential of sustainable agriculture in various Ukrainian regions.

Climate and Human Rights SDG CAMP FOR JOURNALISTS

UKRAINE: INTEGRATIVE MEDIA CAMP for IDPs in rural Ukraine

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) aged 18 to 30 from Ukraine’s war-affected regions, along with staff from refugee NGOs and teachers from the region, participated in an IDP MEDIA CAMP in Western Ukraine, aimed at promoting refugee integration. They learned media literacy basics, data security, social media behavior, conflict-sensitive communication, and age-appropriate teaching methods for media literacy. Participants applied their knowledge in practice by developing and conducting their own integrative media literacy workshops in local rural schools, NGOs, and peer groups.

2022

BELARUS MEDIA HUB Plus

Socially engaged media enthusiasts and civil society activists from Belarus and the Belarusian exile community gained media literacy and journalistic skills through a blended learning MEDIA HUB. In parallel, journalists from independent Belarusian media (both in-country and in exile) were trained as media trainers in a dedicated Training-of-Trainers (ToT) program. Trainers and journalists from Germany, Belarus, and Ukraine guided participants through an online course, followed by a networking meeting and editorial conference. Mentors also participated in a public panel discussion on fake news and disinformation, moderated by the project’s trainer team. ToT participants applied their new skills directly with close support from trainers.

Project outcomes—including media contributions—were published in independent outlets in Belarus and Ukraine, as well as on the project blog and IDEM’s social media channels.

MOLDOVA: News from the Neighborhood – NEWS TRAINING Moldova

In a seminar with workshops in Comrat (Gagauzia), and online trainings, aspiring journalists from the Republic of Moldova – including participants from Gagauzia and Transnistria – were trained as TV news journalists. The project focused on improving both the content and technical quality of news reporting, while also promoting objective journalism and conflict-sensitive reporting techniques to foster understanding of different regional perspectives. Participants learned to identify misinformation and propaganda and to rely on credible sources. As a result, the quality of regional media improved, reporting became more objective, and journalists gained a deeper awareness of the role of non-violent language in conflict reduction. The trainees also became multipliers in their communities and media outlets, raising awareness of issues crucial for sustainable local and regional development, potentially contributing to more informed decision-making and policymaking.

CrossBorder SDG MEDIA CAMP: 5 Countries - 5 Goals

Media representatives from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and Germany participated in a advanced training in Berlin, focusing on SDG-related topics. They networked with each other and with researchers from the participating countries and received practical media skills training. As a kickoff, two rounds of online workshops were held, during which participants jointly analyzed the situation in their countries. As a result, they published cross-border investigations or developed proposals for follow-up investigative projects on sustainable development issues.

GEORGIA: Conflicts and Media in Times of War

Journalists from Eastern Partnership countries and Russia affected by war and conflict were trained in conflict-sensitive, gender- and solutions-oriented reporting, data security, fact-checking, and the identification and avoidance of stereotypes, hate speech, disinformation, and fake news. They participated in three in-person workshops held in different regions of Georgia—each with its own conflict history. As part of the training, they joined research excursions to political hotspots. During the workshops and subsequent e-learning phases, a German-Ukrainian-Georgian trainer team supported participants in producing their own conflict-sensitive and gender-focused media content. They analyzed conflict resolution examples with international experts and applied their insights in their publications, shared them with colleagues in their home media, and formed an international professional network for mutual support.

BELARUS, UKRAINE: Environment Without Borders – Media School Belarus-Ukraine

Young journalists from Belarus and Ukraine gained environmental and media literacy through two consecutive workshops, followed by a media school. They researched cross-border environmental issues such as water use and protection, exploitation of natural resources, nuclear phase-out and renewable energy, and habitat restoration. Their articles were published in Belarusian and Ukrainian media, as well as on environmental NGO websites and the project’s public blog. Participants established a virtual editorial office with mentoring support and published a glossary of scientific environmental terms for editorial use.

RUSSIA: Local Data Journalism in Russia's Regions

Journalists, journalism students, bloggers, and activists interested in data journalism participated in workshops held in Perm, Yekaterinburg, and Chelyabinsk. There, they learned and practiced data journalism methods and developed their own stories in teams. With the support of mentors, participants finalized and published their data-driven stories in regional media. In the second project phase, a Data Hackathon competition took place in Yekaterinburg, where participants created new stories in teams.

GERMANY: FoME Symposium 2021: TRUST – modes of media perception in crisis and transitional contexts

IDEM hosted a panel titled “Can Data Journalism Help Local Media Out of the Crisis?”. Panelists from the Kyrgyz media outlets Kloop, Radio Salam, and the School of Data Kyrgyzstan explored whether data journalism can rebuild trust in the media and offer sustainable solutions for struggling local journalism. The discussion highlighted experiences with data teams, the benefits of data-based reporting in marginalized regions, and examined whether investing in data journalism makes sense for local newsrooms—especially during times of crisis. The German “Forum Media and Development” (Forum Medien und Entwicklung) is a network of institutions and individuals active in the field of media development cooperation.

BRAZIL: Strong voices against COVID - Community radios on prevention and impact of the pandemic on Brazil's indigenous population

In the Brazilian state of Amazonas, indigenous journalists were trained to report effectively on COVID-19 and broader health issues. Through radio and online journalism in indigenous languages, they produced and shared informative pieces on pandemic prevention and indigenous rights. Using accessible and engaging formats, their work reached remote communities and improved access to vital health information—empowering indigenous populations with knowledge and strengthening local media networks.

THE AFGHANISTAN CRISIS: Countering Radicalization and Extremist Tendencies in Central Asia

TANZANIA: Verification of information in times of Covid 19 pandemic in Tanzania/strong>

In rural Tanzania, access to accurate and diverse Covid-19 information has improved through the IDEM training of local journalists. These journalists, representing various media outlets, learned to research, verify, and produce high-quality, engaging multimedia content. They published journalistic pieces and broadcast radio magazine shows, reaching around 1.6 million people. UZBEKISTAN: Establishment of journalistic standards and multimedia formats in independent Uzbek medias environmental reporting

Following an fact-finding mission, IDEM identified Uzbekistan’s cautious media opening as an opportunity to strengthen independent journalism. This project focuses on combining multimedia journalism training with environmental reporting. Key activities include workshops for journalists and students, a research trip to the Aral Sea, the development of a textbook on environmental journalism, and a Training of Trainers program for journalists and NGO PR staff. The initiative also promotes networking between media professionals and environmental NGOs to foster independent, high-quality reporting.

Round tables for journalists with representatives of the National Statistics Committee (Jalal-Abad and Osh / Kyrgyzstan)

Roundtable discussions with representatives of the National Statistics Committee and local journalists took place in the south of Kyrgyzstan. The heads of the National Statistics Committee reported on data collection formats, questionnaires and the forthcoming census in 2020.

For the first time in Kyrgyzstan, methods of coordinating surveys using specialized inspections and geolocalization through a mobile application are being applied: It ensures that real people participate in the survey.

Advanced training for journalism lecturers from colleges and universities in data journalism (Osh / Kyrgyzstan)

In an intensive course lasting several weeks, lecturers from Kyrgyz universities have learned about and developed online and offline concepts of data journalism in order to offer them in their own university courses.

Data journalism schools in Jalal-Abad and Osh / Kyrgyzstan

During a journalism school lasting several weeks, students and young journalists worked with terms such as data sources, data set, csv, excel, scraping.

During a visit to the GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) in Jalalabad, the young data journalists researched the condition of the Arslanbob forest, which is the only source of income for many people in the region. They published their materials in local media.

3rd Industrial Forum Media Toptoo (online - international with focus on Central Asia)

Professionalism and independence of the media in Kyrgyzstan, ensuring that citizens have better access to diverse and balanced information, are less susceptible to media bias, and are able to make better informed civic decisions that reflect the priorities of their communities to best serve the public interest, was the goal of the 3rd Media Forum Toptoo. The media conference was organized by Internews International in Kyrgyzstan. IDEM supported the forum with speakers who gave presentations and discussions on how to produce compelling content and quality advertising to improve monetization and generate income. Due to corona restrictions the conference was held online this year.

Training of Trainers in Multimedia Environmental Reporting (Tashkent / Uzbekistan)

LAMPA 2020 - International online conference on data journalism (Russian-speaking community - worldwide)

LAMPA 2020 is the first online data conference for Russian-speaking data enthusiasts. Medien-Marathon PODIL-72 (Kiew / Ukraine)

Ukrainian employees of NGOs were trained in digital publishing. With this practical know-how, they can use online formats to expand and improve their public image and communication for their NGOs. They have produced videos, photos and multimedia texts - right from the heart of Kiev, the time-honored Podol. IDEM carried out the project together with the Goethe Institute Kiev.

Data Hackathon Competition (Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan)

Just in time for the International Open Data Day, the Data Hackathon started in cooperation with the Data School Kyrgyzstan and Internews International. It lasted 48 hours. Several experts in different teams developed, researched and produced their own features. The Hackathon created a space for informal learning and, with evidence-based media products, increased the capacities, knowledge and potential of local media and created synergies in the field of Open Data between journalists, editorial offices and experts.

2nd Industrial Forum Media Toptoo (Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan)

The goal of the Industrial Forum Media Toptoo is to promote the professionalism and responsibility of the media of Kyrgyzstan and the countries of Central Asia. It focuses on market trends in the media sector. Media Toptoo 2019 became the largest media event in the country. More than 500 media interested people, including speakers and participants from nine different countries, came to Kyrgyzstan to participate in the second Media Toptoo Industrial Forum. IDEM supported this event with its experts. The event was hosted by Internews as part of the Media-K project financed by USAID.

Training of Trainers (ToT) in Data Journalism (Bishkek / Kyrgyzstan)

Data journalism trainers from different regions of Kyrgyzstan have produced and published data journalistic media stories in teams. In addition, they have led training sessions during other IDEM trainings that took place in Kyrgyzstan this year. Their stories have been widely shared in the social media, published several times, translated into other languages, quoted by members of parliament, retweeted by opinion leaders and highlighted by journalist organizations.

A particular success is the award for a paper that was produced as part of IDEM's ToT training and that was chosen by the International Journalists Network (IJNet) of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) as an "outstanding example of data journalism in the Russian-speaking world in 2018".

Round table discussions with journalists (different cities all over Kyrgyzstan)

At the regular round tables IDEM alumni and participants in current IDEM training courses discuss with other journalists from Bishkek and the regions who are interested in an informed exchange.

Data journalism hackathon “Hack Poverty” (Bischkek / Kirgisistan)

In cooperation with AUCA (American University Central Asia) and School of Data Kyrgyzstan IDEM organized the hackathon “Hack Poverty” in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The hackathon was the first event of this kind ever held in the country. One of the goals was creating synergies between professionals of various sectors, connected around the topics of open data, society wellbeing and informing public opinion. For this, we have partnered with the State Committee of Information Technologies and Communication and international organizations such as World Bank, UNDP, FAO and WFP.

All of these partners have actively engaged to bring their data, expertise and experts around the issues of eradicating poverty and increasing well-being in Kyrgyz society.

Data journalism hackathon “Hack Poverty” (Bischkek / Kirgisistan)

In cooperation with AUCA (American University Central Asia) and School of Data Kyrgyzstan IDEM organized the hackathon “Hack Poverty” in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The hackathon was the first event of this kind ever held in the country. One of the goals was creating synergies between professionals of various sectors, connected around the topics of open data, society wellbeing and informing public opinion. For this, we have partnered with the State Committee of Information Technologies and Communication and international organizations such as World Bank, UNDP, FAO and WFP. All of these partners have actively engaged to bring their data, expertise and experts around the issues of eradicating poverty and increasing well-being in Kyrgyz society.

As a result stories based on data have been published. These stories are featured in the popular and established Kyrgyz media.

1. Industrial Forum Media Toptoo (Kyrgyzstan)

This nationwide media conference was aimed at media representatives from all areas. It was organized by Internews and supported by IDEM with experts. The Forum supports the establishment of high quality and independent local media in the country - whose positive trend is encouraged by a dynamic market, relative freedom and the prospect of an increase in advertising market volume.

Fact-Finding-Mission (different regions in Uzbekistan)

During a fact-finding mission to Uzbekistan, IDEM researched the current situation of Uzbek journalists and media, met with staff members of national and international organizations, discussed their current priorities and analyzed their current scope of work. "Tell it Online" - 48 hours Podil (Kiev / Ukraine)

The project "Erzähl's Online 48 Stunden Podil" aimed at qualifying young Ukrainian employees* of NGOs for digital publishing. During the project they were given practical know-how, they learned how to use online formats to expand and improve their visibility and communication in their own projects or for their NGOs. The project was conceived as a 48-hour workshop in the library of the Goethe-Institut Ukraine, based on the idea of a marathon in which an online product (blog, online newspaper/magazine) is developed, created and finally published, involving all departments involved in a production, such as editing, layout, IT, marketing.

Data driven journalism training - Bishkek / Kyrgyz Republic

A group of select media professionals have completed a Training of Trainers (ToT) in data journalism jointly hosted by IDEM.Institute and Internews in Kyrgyzstan. They are expected to support IDEM as trainers for specialized data-driven journalism cascade training of regional journalists and to contribute in their respective media outlets with data visualization and storytelling through data. Looking forward to great data stories this year!

Economic reporting from the regions - Practical training for journalists from Southern Caucasus in Telavi / Georgia

Rural areas are often marginalized. This training provides 15 journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia with practical tips to expand their coverage in a relevant and compelling manner to the regions of their countries. They come into direct contact with micro-entrepreneurs in the Pankisi Valley, who do not back down despite the high unemployment in their region. The journalists train attractive and efficient reporting about people in focus of business and finance. Seminars are in Russian and English.

Protection of minorities and religious freedom in the media - Training for journalists from Southern Caucasus countries in Telavi / Georgia

Political Campaigning, PR and Social Media for Members of NGO, Civic Society and Political Parties in Tbilisi/Georgia

In this project a group of 20 PR workers of political parties, NGOs and civic society organizations in Georgia could be trained in political campaigning. Based on the understanding of how political communication in liberal societies works participants could create their own political campaigns with the help of different online tools as one within a variety of communication instruments. Core of the training was to provide skills in how to get the political message across: How to win the voter`s , reader’s and listener’s heart by successful PR work.

Security correspondents for media in Kyrgyzstan

In this project, Kyrgyz journalists gain knowledge and skills that help them to enforce their right to freedom of expression and freedom of expression also in reporting on security issues. The project has been developed by IDEM at the request of the OSCE Center in Bishkek as a multi-year concept. This context-specific media training was aimed at Kyrgyz media workers who professionally report on terrorism, religious extremism and security measures. The minorities in Kyrgyzstan as well as the political situation of the neighboring countries in the Central Asia region are taken into account. The seminar was conducted in Kyrgyz and Russian.

Personal security in dangerous situations Security training for journalists in Kyrgyzstan

Based on the current dangers caused by the influence of extremist groups, a curriculum for the training of Kyrgyz journalists has been worked out in close cooperation with the OSCE Center in Bishkek to protect media workers in dangerous situations. Journalists from all over Kyrgyzstan were invited to the security training "Journalists' behavior in conflict and crisis situations". Special attention was paid to the participation of women and representatives of minority media. The seminar was conducted in Kyrgyz and Russian.

Round Table Talks on Security Issues for Media Workers in Kyrgyzstan

Since 2016 round table talks have been held for chief editors and heads of Kyrgyz media under the patronage of IDEM in various places in Kyrgyzstan. During these regular follow-up rounds, the media builders exchange experiences and discuss solutions for reporting on extremism and terrorism in the region and around the world. These discussions will also lead to the informal networking of journalists who are researching topics such as corruption, religious extremism and terrorism. The round table talks are organized, moderated and documented by IDEM, and conducted in Kyrgyz and Russian.

Analysis of Media in Tajikistan and of Exile Media from Uzbekistan

Preparation of Professional Literature on Journalism and Media in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia Technical literature for training and education of journalists at universities, journalist schools and editorial offices

In order to meet the requirements of a modern training of journalists and the increasing demand for a serious, neutral and fair reporting based on journalistic standards, IDEM develops a series of journalistic literature in cooperation with the universities in Baku, Yerevan and Tbilisi. The professional textbooks are provided, amongst others, at faculties for journalism, communication and media sciences. With its focus on comprehensive practical training, future - and already practicing – media workers are to be tuned to specific situations in their professional life. The practical manuals contain exercises and solutions for teachers as well as the entire teaching material is also ideally suited for self-study.

Tell us the truth - Citizen Journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia and Georgia in Dialogue Workshop in Tbilisi/Georgia

Accompanied by a mentor program, young people from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia learn to work with camera, cutting programs and get to know the basics of journalism. A professional journalist from the hometown of the participant will coach him as a personal mentor partner for the length of two months. Good contributions were published on a professional media platform. Along the way the participants get to know each other and communicate on equal terms in spite the many conflicts dividing the region. The training was conducted in Russian.

Diaspora in Dialogue - Caucasian Rapprochement Video workshop for young people in Armenia and Azerbaijan

Under the title „Your Story, My Story: Bridging the Void“ IDEM invited young people in Armenia and Azerbaijan to record some of their fellow citizens fates as refugees of the Nagorny Karabach conflict. A group in Azerbaijan and a group in Armenia had been trained on narrative interviews and video production with digicams and mobile phones. At a workshop in Georgia, the combined participants presented their work and identified a winner. The training was conducted in Russian language.

Sing for Democracy – Eurovision in Azerbaijan Media Freedom, Human Rights and the European Song Contest

IDEM was the exclusive and official partner of “Sing for Democracy” (www.singfordemocracy.org). Together with the local human rights activists of Sing for Democracy, IDEM was the contact for European journalists and politicians concerning the human rights campaign around the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. IDEM offered background information, contacts and events details on citizen rights and media freedom. Together with Friedrich Ebert Foundation IDEM invited representatives from leading German and Austrian media to meet officials and opposition leaders in Baku.
